Greg Hands MP has expressed support for the Government's recent announcement, which grants greater autonomy to hundreds of thousands of patients regarding their healthcare. Those who have endured lengthy waits for treatment will now have the option to seek care at different hospitals if it means receiving prompt attention.
This initiative is part of the extensive NHS Elective Recovery Plan, targeting patients who have waited over 40 weeks without a confirmed appointment date. Eligible individuals will be contacted by their hospital via various communication channels via letter, text, or email. Approximately 400,000 eligible patients, will receive offers and can provide details, such as preferred travel distance, for consideration.
NHS teams will then explore alternative hospital options with available capacity, potentially leveraging the Digital Mutual Aid System to match patients with suitable providers across the country. This progress reflects the dedication of NHS staff and the implementation of innovative measures, such as surgical hubs, community diagnostic centres, and the use of robots and AI to expedite treatments.
This initiative aligns with the Government's commitment to addressing waiting lists, with an estimated 400,000 patients, which is 5% of the total waiting list, set to benefit.
Patients who do not find alternative options within eight weeks will retain their position on the waiting list with their current provider. However, some patients may be deemed ineligible due to complex clinical conditions that make travel inappropriate.
Eligible patients will receive direct communication from their NHS trust or independent sector provider, and they are advised not to contact their GP practice or hospital directly.
